Soundtrack for your Turkey DayPosted: October 10, 2011
Finding appropriate music to play while family is over for Thanksgiving dinner can be a bit of a challenge. Your 80-year old uncle might not appreciate the sounds of Kanye West’s new album and you really can’t sit through another round of ______ (insert nationality here) folk songs. Well I might have just come up with a a solution that’s suitable for everyone. Maxence Cyrin.
I stumbled upon the French pianist’s work while listening to one of my favourite work appropriate online radio programs – KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic. What I heard was lovely piano music followed by – wait.. is that… it can’t be… it is! It was the Pixie’s “Where is my Mind” transformed into a beautiful piano sonata (I’m actually not even sure if sonata is the correct term, but just roll with me please). Maxence takes some of our favourite songs from various genres – ranging from new wave and rock to electro and pop – and reinterprets them in a way that makes them new yet familiar (and let’s not forget tolerable for the whole family). His two studio albums, Modern Rhapsodies (2006) and Novo Piano (2010), contain piano covers of songs by artists such as Massive Attack Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Arcade Fire, MGMT, Daft Punk and yes, even Beyonce.
Check out his videos too. The beautiful silent short films accompanied with his emotional piano renditions are truly moving.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
